We are on the cutting edge of technology and offer orthokeratology, commonly known as Ortho-K to our patients. These specially designed contact lenses reshape your cornea(the front part of your) as you sleep, allowing you to take your lenses out and see clearly the next day. Ortho-K is a safe alternative to LASIK. Otho-K does not require surgery or permanent change to your eyes, making it an excellent alternative to LASIK. We routinely use ortho-k to correct nearsightedness, farsightedness, prebyopia and astigmatism and to also slow the progression of childhood myopia.
Who is a candidate for Ortho-K?
The overnight corneal reshaping of ortho-k provides is temporary, and therefore you can discontinue wearing your lenses at night anytime. Ortho-K is an effective alternative to vision correction surgeries, and for people who desire independence from contacts such as atheltes, dry eye patients, or if you work in a dusty environment.
Ortho-K versus LASIK
Ortho-K has become a popular alternative to LASIK. The FDA approved ortho-k in 2002. Ortho-K has become preferred over LASIK as it requires no surgical intervention whatsoever.
*LASIK is a surgey, thus requiring risk. LASIK can have negative permanent side effects such as dry eyes, halos from lights and occasionally impaired vision.
*LASIK requires your vision to be stable for many years and also the age requirement of 18 before becoming a candidate for surgery.
Ortho-K works excellent for all ages. It can provide athletes and outdoor enthusiasts freedom from contact lenses without any permanent eye problems that may result from LASIK.
*Ortho-K can be used before the age of 18 and to slow the rate of nearsightness progression in children.
*Unlike LASIK, ortho-k is reversible, simply by taking your lenses out and not wearing them again.
*Ortho-k is significantly less expenseive than LASIK.
